NL West Draft Review

NL WEST

Cheyenne Marmots

Overall Review: B overall they got a few solid pitching prospects and brought in a lot of speed for the future. Only reached on getting Lanning, but with a poor crop of catchers a reach might have been nesicairy.

SUMMARY

1

22

$2,040K

Phil Morgan

SP

18

HS

$2,040K

4.3

Dominant control and 4 ready pitches should allow Morgan to have success at each level he pitches; his growth potential is solid so he should make his projections with proper promotions.

1

27

$1,570K

Yank Lanning

C

18

HS

$1,570K

3.15

All-star potential on defense, but an average hitter at best at the plate. Poor plate discipline and a shoddy left split will limit his everyday potential

1

39

---

Pedro Rivera

2B

18

HS

---

3.45

Sign ability issues allowed Rivera to split down the board and fall to the Marmots. An above average hitter with lightning speed. His low power might limit his career, but still expect to see him a lot

2

80

$550K

Don Li

SS

18

HS

$550K

3.25

Li is a defensive stud who also happens to host plus speed. Again the Marmots over look getting a bat for a defensive all stars.

3

112

$425K

Vinny Sasaki

C

20

JC

$425K

3.20

Offensively gifted catcher who will contribute as a backstop, but not a game caller. His solid strength and good splits should allow his a good ML career

4

145

$350K

Clarence James

3B

18

HS

$350K

2.75

Defensively suited for the outfield, offensively suited for the bench. James will be lucky to get a cup of coffee in the Show.

5

177

$250K

Ted Tobin

3B

20

JC

$250K

2.88

Left handed power hitting platoon. Probably could make a decent left fielder, but don't expect much of a contributor

Colorado Springs Organizational Filler
Overall Review: B Lopez his be solid in the league but a poor left hand split with keep him from getting respect around the league. Guiel is a great 2nd round pick up for a mindful coach

4 plus pitches good control and stamina make for a dominant package. Lopez is ML caliber, but his struggle with those great left hand hitters out their

Sean Guiel

3.49

All star reliever if he can work with his poor durability, if not he still has great splits and 4 plus pitches to work with once a week. He is a great pitcher for an active manager to use and monitor

A whole lot of nothing for only FIVE MILLION DOLLARS!

San Diego Surf

Overall Review: C- bad start to a draft that picked up in the latter rounds. Green is a big reach with a middle of the 1st round pick. He is the type of guy going 30-50 picks later. For an NL team defense should be a priority in the draft the best prospects the surf brought in lack this attribute.

SUMMARY

1

18

---

Travis Green

SS

22

COL

---

3.71

Biggest reach in the 1st round. Average hitter with defense that's better suited for 3B. Travis does have good speed and solid potential, but won't amount to much of a star

1

36

$880K

Jacob DiFelice

RF

21

COL

MILB

3.2

Great slap hitter, not going to hit many homeruns but could steal 10-15 bags a season. Defensively he might be a liability outside of 1B

2

71

$550K

Andres Mercado

2B

19

JC

MILB

3.1

Another fast runner with no power, a poor batting eye and a defense better suited for LF.

3

103

$425K

Larry Wood

CF

21

COL

MILB

2.8

Obviously recruited for speed as they scored their 4th speed guy who offers little else outside his base running. Could play him at 2nd and CF in a pinch, but he should get most of his starts there. An average hitter with below average splits

4

119

$350K

Larry Crede

RF

20

JC

MILB

3.0

Average hitter with decent right handed splits and good speed, not going to stick in the ML for long

4

136

$350K

Greg Wall

SP

22

COL

MILB

2.9

Below average splits corrupt an otherwise solid pitcher3 quality pitchers, good control and solid velocity.

5

168

$250K

Don Strickland

2B

20

JC

MILB

3.1

Can't hit but sure can run and should provide good defense as well

Colorado Mile High Club
Overall Review: B+ O'malley will fit great in a revitalized pitching staff. Barnes is a hit or miss guy some will love his skills others will run from his lack of control. Hill and Thomson are great value picks

Potential

SUMMARY

1

2

$3,910K

Steve O'Malley

SP

22

COL

4.63

Superstar pitcher with great control and stamina. He as punch out velocity with a killer fastball and slider along with a good 3rd pitch curve. He is going to need time and coaching to make his potential

1

43

---

Scot Barnes

SP

18

HS

3.36

A good 2 pitches (fastball sinker) and great splits with allow Scot an ML career. His poor control and low stamina will make it potentially short.

2

54

$550K

Eric Sullivan

RF

20

JC

2.76

On he positive good power, speed and he is a natural bunter, on the downside he has horrible splits.

3

87

$425K

Chris Hill

CF

22

COL

3.17

Solid 2 bagger with slightly above average hitting and speed. He is a classic grinder who will sneak abs until his arbitration gets to expensive and gets cut.

4

120

---

Phil Thomson

SP

18

HS

3.25

Solid starting pitcher with slightly above average splits versus lefties and very mediocre stats against righties. With 3 solid pitches he seems to be a gem in the 4th round

5

152

$250K

Jay Roberts

RP

18

HS

2.50

Good control,1 great pitch and 2 average options should guide him in the minors his poor splits will allow him to stay there for his career
