AL South DRAFT REVIEW S13

AL SOUTH

Oklahoma City Chickens
OVERALL SUMMARY: C+ Monroe will be a servable bullpen guy, but nothing close to a 1st round stud a mean looks to bank on. Velazquez is their biggest catch, but his value is deflated by his position.

SUMMARY

1

Wes Monroe

RP

18

HS

MILB

3.4

High Schooler slated as a bullpen arm, he has solid enough splits to go with great control and 3 solid pitches. He will struggle more than an ML'er should against left handed hitting and has below standard durability.

1

40

$720K

Fergie Wickman

CF

22

COL

MILB

2.95

Slightly above average runner, but below average hitter and a poor choice for CF. He might slip into the Major's as an injury replacement, but not the guy you want to stick for many seasons.

1

49

$600K

Eli Velazquez

1B

21

COL

MILB

3.3

Weaker than you would like to see at 1B, but is serviceable. He has great plate presence and should be a decent option at DH for his career.

2

83

$550K

Michael Womack

2B

19

JC

MILB

2.56

Poor choice for an everyday guy, every time he starts at SS Cal Ripken cries.

3

115

---

Bart Barfield

CF

19

JC

---

2.5

For 6M or more a season you could have an average defensive 2 sacker who will struggle at bat after at bat. I don't like it either.

4

148

$350K

Horace Keefe

RF

20

JC

MILB

2.98

Contact and good speed for a left hand hitting platoon. He provides little in the field and has only a slight chance to make consistent ML starts

5

180

---

Curtis Morris

P

18

HS

---

2.8

Probably AAA will be his final home, He has average pitches with average control and splits, giving him a below average shot to do anything

St. Louis Rustlers
OVERALL SUMMARY: C Defense was the key to the Rustler's draft, but they overlooked ability at the plate. In a league where hitting is king they struck out.

POTENTIAL

SUMMARY

1

16

$2,600K

Milt Radmanovich

CF

22

COL

MILB

3.4

Defensively he is the guy you want patrolling the center field. On the base path he's the guy you want running the base. At the plate he's the guy you hope won't hit into the inning ending double play.

2

68

$550K

Robert Morris

CF

22

COL

MILB

3.15

Less of a defender and a hitter than Radmanovich is and he has the speed to steal a base if he only understood the mental aspects of doing so

3

101

---

Steve Snyder

RF

18

HS

---

3.11

He'll hit 40+ HR at the ML level, but won't break an 850 OPS. He has the power but poor batting splits and an below average contact swing will keep him from holding a regular gig.

4

134

$350K

Garland Kiner

SS

22

COL

MILB

2.55

I don't see Kinar getting out of the minors without a plane crash.

5

$250K

Marty Elder

P

22

COL

MILB

2.45

Career minor league inning eater

San Juan Sixburghs
OVERALL SUMMARY: A Solid overall draft picking up for guys with ML caliber guts. King should be a hot commodity because he will never be an expensive option for the back end of the rotation.

D.J. Hoiles

1B

19

JC

MILB

3.9

Not sure you want to have this guy at 1st base for many innings; he is a poor man's choice. At the plate it's a whole different story, He will be an offensive stud hitting 30+ homeruns.

2

69

---

Francis King

SP

21

COL

---

3.5

Should be slated as a solid #4 or 5 starter for most teams in the league, he might not be an all-star every season, but he should give a team quality innings for awhile

3

102

---

Vin Stynes

1B

18

HS

---

3.15

Great eye at the plate and a great contact hitter, but his low splits and poor fielding will give him a long AAA career with few ML At Bats

4

135

---

Neifi Castro

C

22

COL

---

3.20

Basically a good hitting college polished DH, might be a little too weak to be a ML backstop consistently.

5

167

---

Rich Sanders

P

18

HS

---

2.85

A couple pitches and below average control will not be enough to get Sanders an extended look anywhere.

Louisville Loud Mouths

OVERALL SUMMARY: Strong draft picking up a couple keys for the future in pitchers DeJean and Mills. Milner is an NL quality fielder who should find away to stick.

POTENTIAL

SUMMARY

1

7

Mike DeJean

SP

18

HS

---

3.9

Solid stamina control and pitches, but has far from ace quality splits. He projects to be a #2 or 3 guy where ever he pitches

1

33

---

Bip Milner

SS

19

JC

---

3.5

Defensively he's an everyday Shortstop who can provide a consistent bat. He might average 10-15 homers in his prime with a hand full of stolen bases. Alas he has a college girlfriend that he can't bear to leave and might never sign

2

2

$550K

Mickey Ramirez

2B

18

HS

MILB

3.45

Great range and speed, Ramirez has almost no pop to his bat but should be able to leg easily anything he hits on the ground. Expect a mixed career for him.

3

92

$425K

Ernest Mills

RP

21

COL

MILB

3.11

4 pitch long reliever with his below average splits when he does make it to the major expect an era north of 5.80

4

125

---

Josh Garcia

SP

18

HS

---

2.6

Lack of control will make him a hard case for the majors; He also has AAA quality splits. On a positive note he does have 3 ML quality pitches

5

$250K

Ivan Burroughs

2B

20

JC

MILB

2.75

He should have stayed in college he is an average at best overall prospect with no outstanding talent
