SUMMARY

1

12

Darron Pecina

RP

20

JC

MILB

$2,970K

Pecina features pinpoint control and plus splits to go along with his 2 pitch repertoire. His excellent durability will allow him to pitch back to back a few times.

1

17

Armando Segui

RP

22

COL

MILB

$2,500K

Another top flight reliever, great control and splits and 2 top level pitches will make Segui tough to hit on. His low velocity will also put a lot of balls on the carpet for the fielders.

4

128

Pedro Gomez

C

22

COL

MILB

$350K

Grade A defensive catcher. He offers a good pop with his bat, but won't hit for average and probably not hit too much in the clutch.

5

160

Kid Klaus

2B

18

HS

MILB

$250K

He's a runner with good contact and no power; This seemed to be the theme of the 5th round for a lot of teams.

Summary: strengthened their bullpen for the future with 2 top 20 picks. Gomez should fill their catcher need and gives them the ability not to depend on FA in the future. Kid Klaus has a great name.

Grade: B+

SUMMARY

2

77

Damion Van Poppel

RP

21

COL

---

---

Van Poppel is a great 2nd round draw, A solid bullpen arm with good splits and solid control, His pitch selection is strong, and has the durability to pitch back to back when called on.

3

109

Earl Walters

3B

19

JC

---

---

Defensively weak for a 2 bagger, Walters is not weak at the plate where he should crush a number of balls, his poor splits will keep him from too many major league home runs though.

4

141

Albert Gibson

P

21

COL

---

---

Average splits and 3 solid pitches give Gibson hope for an ML career, but it will be short lived and very sporadic.

5

173

Phil Palmer

2B

18

HS

---

---

Solid speed and no power, Palmer has ML dreams and could make it for someone who needs his wheels and isn't afraid of his poor splits.

Summary: With no 1st round pick the chicken's had to pick strong in the 2nd round and they did a good job picking what they did. Van Poppel is a great 2nd round selection. Walters is very talented but won't make the bigs without learning to hit pitching.

Grade: B-

SUMMARY

1

8

Rob Mulder

SS

18

HS

---

---

Could be an all-star 3rd baseman he is above average across the boards in hitting and speed. He is going to give a team a quality star, but probably rack up career numbers under the radar.

1

44

Robert Lundquist

2B

18

HS

MILB

$600K

Average hitter with solid speed but poor base running. Lunquist will find a home in the OF as an opposed to 2B. He is a 4A caliber player on a good team, might get a few starts on a desperate team.

2

60

Ronald Durham

P

20

JC

MILB

$550K

Poor below average splits doom and otherwise excellent pitcher, Durham has 4 solid pitches and great control. Probably will not land far out of AAA

3

92

Peter Carver

P

21

COL

MILB

$425K

Solid 3rd rounder with excellent splits and control and 2 solid pitches. Future ML'er

4

124

Frank Meyer

P

19

JC

MILB

$350K

Poor splits on an otherwise average pitcher. AAA fodder

5

156

Corky Valdes

RF

20

JC

MILB

$250K

Decent speed and good power compliment a solid fielder. Corky does have below average splits and will be a career minor leaguer without a bump to lean on.

Summary: If the sign Mulder they instantly add the 3B this team needed. Lundquist is the player to be named later in some trade; he is a package able player. Carver is also a great ML pick found in the 3rd round. Overall the best draft this organization has seen in awhile

Grade: B+

SUMMARY

1

14

Theo Stearns

LF

21

COL

---

---

Solid power and speed, but only slightly above average splits, Stearns is a good LF, way plenty of tools to offer. At 21 he has a lot of skill in place, but will be very slow to improve with below average makeup

3

98

Happy Jensen

3B

18

HS

---

---

Solid fielding and very well versed against left handed pitching, Happy has below average hitting for a major leaguer and probable will never excel out of AAA.

4

130

Cord Nielsen

2B

20

JC

---

---

Has the speed, contact and fielding, he just has very poor batting splits to work with. Without a DITR he stays in the minors.

5

162

Garrett Grimes

2B

19

JC

---

---

Good power average speed and poor batting splits will limit Grimes impact anywhere he goes.

Summary: Stearn in my opinion went a little high, but positional players were a premium in this draft. Although Stearns is not much defensively so he could have been avoided for solid pitching with this pick. The rest of the first 5 picks have similar issues. Overall a very disappointing draft in Louisville.
