AL EAST DRAFT RECAP S10

Boston Badasses

Needs from the draft: 1: 3B 2: RP 3: 2B/CF

1 24 BOS Ivan Hoiles SP 22 COL $1,850K Solid bottom of the rotation pitcher he has 3 solid pitches but will struggle against lefties. Good control and velocity should cover some of these issues but he might still struggle.

2 70 BOS Clinton Bickerton RP 20 JC $550K Wild pitcher should have all the tools to be an all-star except the ability to get the ball over the plate consistently.

3 102 BOS Cecil Klaus SP 22 COL $425K Flyball thrower with poor splits does not bode well outside of AAA. He would need to be a Diamond in the rough to make it to the pros.

4 134 BOS Mel Rivers CF 20 JC $350K Solid 4th round prospect projects some power and is adequate at the plate versus righties. He will also hold his own in the field.

5 166 BOS Wayne Nathan SP 21 COL --- Career minor leaguer

Summary: Badasses needed a future star at 3B and instead went after another starting pitcher. In the 2nd round they filled a need with a great reliever if you can overlook his control issues. Bickerton should make the Majors with everything else he brings to the table though. 4th rounder Mel Rivers is another character guy who fills a critical need in the organization. He is not going to overwhelm you with his production but he should get ab's in the Pros.

Germany Barker

MILB

$3,910K

Might have been a little reach with the 2nd overall pick, but here he is. He is a power hitting CF who will underperform in CF and may never get to his projections without great coaching. Expect many strikeouts, but also many dingers in the majors.

2

48

Wes Harvey

SP

Above average projections mask poor splits. As he stands he might get a shot on a bad team, but he would have a difficult time sticking.

Similar to Harvey but with better splits. He might stick for awhile in the pros but will struggle and give up a lot of big hits and homeruns.

Summary: Durham went after their #1 need with the 2nd pick and scored with Barker. He might have been a little reach, but he fills a huge hole in the Bull's system and should project to be an everyday guy in their lineup. After number 1 the team drafted system players who will fill out the ranks in the minors for their career.

Weak against left handers, but overall he's a strong hitter who should get a few all-star nods and be able to drive the Hartford offense for years to come.

Graham Jensen

Defensive all-star who has a huge swing, but extremely low splits. He is a slow developer and may never reach those dreamy defensive numbers

4

Dee Lowell

CF

Solid defender and hitter, he has solid wheels and good base running, he might get a cup of coffee in the pros.

Lonnie Polcovich

RF

22

COL

MILB

$250K

Poor defender but a solid hitter and runner, he is a great pickup in the 5th round

Summary: got their RF they needed in the 5th round a long time to wait to fill a position of need. Their 1st overall pick is a little shaky and might end up being trade bait as they already have 2 better options at 2nd base in their system. Jensen is useful as a defensive replacement if he can develop to that point. Without addressing pitching this team might have major issues in the future.

Summary: Relief pitching was overlook and that might hurt in the long run. The only thing solid in this draft was the Relief options and none were taken in the 1st 5 rounds by Washington. Instead they strengthen their SS corp. with a Defensive dynamo. Possible trade bait as you can't start 3 guys at SS. The Badasses also picked up a Slow and weak hitting 3b. Overall this was not the best draft for this team.
