AL North Draft Review S13

AL NORTH

New York Bombers

OVERALL REVIEW: B- Nichting is a solid ML prospect and should fit into a pitching staff well if the owner is diligent with his needs. The only other sure thing prospect might be Milton. You have to think that New York was hoping for 1 more guys to round things out in this draft.

Curtis Nichting

P

19

JC

MILB

4.1

Solid Strikeout caliber pitcher he has 3 pitches of high standard, but also has 2 additional options in his arsenal. His low end stamina will limit his career options as a starter, but he has great makeup and is very polished for a 19 year old

1

48

$600K

Jim Milton

SP

18

HS

MILB

3.45

Below average control mars and otherwise great prospect. He has 4 solid pitches great stamina and control and plus splits. With his middle of the road velocity and below average control he might never get an opportunity to get a lot of service time

2

81

$550K

Rene Sweeney

SS

19

JC

MILB

2.90

Not going to be much in the field but could slide over to 3B and be decent. He has an average bat and below average base running. He is not going to make it far out of AAA if he gets a shot

3

113

---

Ernest Hughes

RF

21

COL

---

2.85

Good speed and plus power, but a 7M price tag will send him into the football draft.

4

146

$350K

Otto Hoyt

P

22

COL

MILB

3.0

Situational right hand specialist. Weak against the left handers but slightly above average against a righty. He has 1 great pitch to lean on and a decent fall back forkball. He is not going to light to many fires

5

178

---

Shawn Shields

SS

18

HS

---

2.55

Below average hitter and a better option t 3b or in the outfield than at SS. Shield is not bringing much talent to the table and won't see time above AAA

Madison Massa's
OVERALL REVIEW: A- Made the most out of 4 1st rounds picks landing a premier CF a serviceable SS and a great relief prospect. If Jefferies can make it out of the minors in one piece, this will be a great draft

Summary

1

25

---

James Jefferies

CF

18

HS

---

4.7

Good Hitter with better power, He sees the ball quite well and is a tough at bat; James also has solid speed with below average base running and superior defense. He is also made of glass

1

29

---

Julian Bennett

SS

18

HS

---

3.8

Top flight defensive shortstop that bring a small stick to the plate. Bennett is not going to lead many rallies at the plate, but he should hurt a team enough not to consider him an everyday option at SS

1

37

$840K

Alberto Vega

2B

18

HS

MILB

3.7

Solid power and a decent plate presence, Vega could over a solid everyday option at 2b, but is better suited for LF.

1

42

$640K

Pablo Ramirez

RP

22

COL

MILB

3.75

Solid polished college reliever with good splits and 2 solid pitches; HE has good durability and great control and has the ability to educe the groundball.

2

70

$550K

Ernest Bailey

2B

20

JC

MILB

3.66

Solid hitter and runner, but not going to set many things on fire in this league. He will provide a solid option and could be a capable option for a team

2

78

$550K

Edgardo Espinosa

RF

18

HS

MILB

3.4

Good power and speed, but with limited defensive options. He is going to be a swing and miss type hitter. He could find a niche somewhere for a time

3

110

---

Ellie Wheat

CF

21

COL

---

2.8

Solid defender and runner, but has no plate presence. IF he slips into the majors it will be for a short time and only as a bench player

4

143

$350K

Robert Mathews

CF

22

COL

MILB

2.7

Decent defender with great contact and speed. He has rock bottom hitting splits if he catches a DITR he could be a threat if not. Look for a long Minor league career

5

151

---

Orlando Sosa

LF

18

HS

---

2.55

Identical to Mathews, but not quite the fielder and also with a 7M price tag. He's going to college!

5

175

$250K

Raymond Sutton

LF

18

HS

MILB

2.58

Average hitter with poor speed and fielding. He has minor league career written all over him

Toledo Holy
OVERALL REVIEW: B Without a 1st rounder, the Holy still drafted quite well Landing a pair of ML prospects although neither will be superstars they could hold decent niche values in a few seasons.

Perry Wood

CF

JC

MILB

3.25

Defensive CF with good solid speed, but a below average bat. Wood is a defensive sub or base runner in this league and not an everyday option.

3

114

$425K

Al Winn

SP

22

COL

MILB

3.1

Solid Starter with good control and decent pitch selection, he is below average against left handers which will limit his ML impact.

4

$350K

Kris Carroll

SP

21

COL

MILB

2.7

Poor man's version of Winn.

5

179

$250K

Pete Walsh

SS

21

COL

MILB

2.4

Poor Hitter and a below average SS fielder. He is not going to over a whole lot outside of the minors

Fargo Fevola's

OVERALL REVIEW: B Kile can be built around for the future and Romananski is a great reliever for an observant manager. The rest of the draft filled holes in the minors

SUMMARY

1

5

---

Randy Kile

LF

22

COL

---

3.75

He could very easily be a 50/50 guy at the ML level. His defense is a little less than desired but his bat should earn him all the all-star nods.

2

57

$530K

Hugh Romanski

RP

18

HS

MILB w/STI

3.65

Solid 3 pitch reliever with below average durability and low stamina. He might find a good ever 4th day groove and offer good innings, but he is going to be no one's backbone in the pen

3

90

$425K

Rick Shaw

LF

19

JC

MILB

3.00

Defensively solid speedster. His bat is on the weak end, but his glove and wheels should earn him a call someday. His poor makeup will make this a challenge

4

123

$350K

Walker Hooper

RP

19

JC

MILB

2.65

Situational righty with good stamina and durability and a pair of solid pitches. He has great control but his average to below average splits make it hard to see him getting out of AAA

5

155

$250K

Don Sweeney

CF

19

JC

MILB

2.6

Good speed and a solid contact hitter, but he have defensively suited for left or right field and will offer almost nothing at the plate. His career is going to burn out quickly in AAA
